This is one of those stories that reminds you why small communities, especially those here in Upstate New York, matter so much.

The Rescue

On Sunday afternoon, December 28th, Ticonderoga Police say they were called to Black Point Road after a dog fell through the ice.

Patrolman Scott Cook responded and reached the animal, but as he attempted the rescue, the ice gave way beneath him, sending him into the freezing water. Moments later, the dog’s owner also fell through the ice while trying to help.

The Risk

Despite the dangerous conditions, Patrolman Cook pulled the dog to safety, assisted the owner out of the water, and then rescued himself.

The dog was taken home, the owner was transported to the emergency room, and EMS evaluated Patrolman Cook, who later returned to duty.

What truly stood out came after the rescue.

The Heartfelt Thank You

In a public statement, the Ticonderoga Police Department thanked Matthew and Heidi Karkoski, the local family who opened their home to Patrolman Cook.

In an act of kindness that is not always shown (but is always appreciated), this family provided him with a warm, comfortable place to hang out and some dry clothes while EMS was on its way.

It’s a small gesture that speaks volumes. An officer risking his life to save another, neighbors stepping up without hesitation, and a department taking the time to recognize compassion just as loudly as courage.

You love to see it!
