Almanac Predicts First Frost For Capital Region Cities & Towns
It's another sign that we are nearing the end of an epic summer in the Capital Region: our first frost will be here before you know it.
Maybe you have seen those first few maple leaves showing a red tinge, or is it the pumpkin-flavored everything starting to show up on store shelves? Or is it been the increased craving for the area's best cider donuts? Outside of some cooler temps and shorter days, all the signs of autumn arriving soon are upon us.
Those cooler temperatures will soon turn your wardrobe from flip-flops and shorts to flannels and jeans - which means that the first frost is right around the corner.
What Conditions Define Frost?
The Old Farmer's Almanac has defined the varying levels of frost/freeze temperatures and how they affect plants as frost ends the growing season:
- Light freeze: 29 to 32 degrees (Tender plants are killed)
- Moderate freeze: 25 to 28 degrees (Destructive to most vegetation)
- Severe freeze: 24 degrees and below (Heavy damage to most garden plants)
The Almanac's 2024 Frost Calculator determines the average date of the last light freeze of spring and the first light freeze of fall. Below you can scroll through the average dates of the first light freeze throughout the Capital Region this autumn.
