
2 Men Ejected from Horse and Buggy After Scary Collision With Car In Herkimer County
New York State Police are investigating a car vs. horse and buggy accident in Herkimer County.
What happened on the morning of October 3rd that caused a crash between a motor vehicle and an Amish horse and buggy in the town of Schuyler? Speed, impatience and aggressive driver were only a few factors.
On Friday October 3, 2025, at approximately 7:58am, New York State Police responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a car and an Amish buggy on Cosby Manor Road in the town of Schuyler, NY.
Early indications show that a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling westbound at an unsafe speed. The driver of the Jetta was following an Amish horse-drawn buggy too closely and attempted to pass it. During the maneuver, the Jetta collided with the buggy, causing both buggy occupants to be ejected.
The horse pulling the buggy was not killed or injured in the crash. The occupants of the Amish buggy were identified as:
- Moses J. Swartzentruber, age 40, of Poland, NY
- Andy J. Troyer, age 30, of Poland, NY – sustained non-life-threatening injuries
The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta has been identified as 45-year-old Matthew L. Walker of Remsen, NY. Walker was not injured in this accident but he was issued multiple traffic tickets including:
- No License
- Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree
- Failure to Keep Right
- Unsafe Passing on the Left
- Unreasonable Speed / Special Hazards
- Circumvent Interlock – Subject to Court Order – Operate Without Device
- According to the DWI Team, an ignition interlock device is a device that is installed in a motor vehicle and prevents the vehicle from starting unless the driver provides a breath sample that is below a certain blood alcohol content.
