Can this former Great Dane be NFL DPOY?
UAlbany fans remember all too well how exciting defensive end Jared Verse was to watch during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Following his transfer to Florida State, he continued to be a dominant force, totaling 18 sacks in two years, and setting a career high in tackles for loss his first year there. To the surprise of no one, he became a top NFL draft prospect, eventually being drafted in the 1st round by the Los Angeles Rams with the 19th overall pick.
Naturally fans around the capital region had high hopes for the former Great Dane, but one could even make the case he exceeded expectations in his rookie season. Verse went on to start 16 of 17 games, tallying 36 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and even forced 2 fumbles. He made his first career sack in his debut game, and scored his first touchdown during his first playoff game, when he took a recovered fumble back 57 yards in the wild card round against the Minnesota Vikings. He would go on to be named a pro bowler, a member of the Pro Football Writers of America's all rookie team, and will forever be the 2024 NFL defensive rookie of the year.
Now in year 2, his expectations jump even higher. As the odds sit right now Verse is at +1500 to win NFL defensive player of the year (same odds as all pro Maxx Crosby). That puts him at the 7th best odds in the whole league to win the illustrious award. Even if Verse doesn't become DPOY this year, he's only 24 years old and has all the tools of being a DPOY winner before his career is done.
