September 11th is always a very emotional day in New York.
On that day 23 years ago, America experienced one of it's most devastating tragedies. 2,977 people lost their lives in connection with multiple terrorist attacks that took place across the country.
Each year, when the calendar reaches the 11th day of September, we all find ways to remember those who lost their lives, and to honor those who survived while saving lives at Ground Zero.
In 2001, Americans were given a brief, but meaningful, reprieve from grief via the resumption of sports in New York. The New York Mets were the first team to play a game following the September 11th attacks, with the Yankees, Giants and Jets following suit soon after.
Professional sports played a huge role in the healing process 23 years ago, and in 2024, the meaningful connection between sports and remembrance still exists.

As they do every year, members of the New York Yankees and Mets donned hats with "FDNY" and "NYPD" logos on them for their games on Wednesday.
The Yankees wore their hats at Yankee Stadium, as the team beat Kansas City in extra innings. Meanwhile, the Mets wore their hats in a game played north of the border, as New York came back to beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the ninth inning.
In a beautiful case of irony, both teams fought through adversity to triumph on Wednesday.
With all of that being said, we found a few photos of Yankees and Mets' players wearing their commemorative hats on the field on Wednesday. Scroll below to see a compilation of those photos.
